World War II dramas are a cinema staple, but director Anthony Maras’s gripping historical film Pressure shifts the focus away from the battlefront and directly into the pressure-cooker environment of the war room. Starring Andrew Scott and Brendan Fraser, the film turns meteorology into a pulse-pounding race against time.

Andrew Scott as Group Captain James Stagg: The Scottish Chief Meteorological Officer tasked with delivering the ultimate weather call.
Brendan Fraser as General Dwight D. Eisenhower: Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, bearing the weight of the D-Day decision.
Kerry Condon as Lt. Kay Summersby: Eisenhower’s loyal military aide.
Damian Lewis as Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery: The experienced British commander preparing his troops for Normandy.
Chris Messina as Irving P. Krick: Eisenhower’s optimistic American meteorologist, whose forecast directly conflicts with Stagg’s.
The Plot
Adapted from David Haig’s acclaimed 2014 stage play of the same name, Pressure takes place over the tense 72 hours leading up to June 5, 1944.
As 350,000 Allied troops gather on the English coast for Operation Overlord—the largest seaborne invasion in human history—General Eisenhower must decide whether to order the attack. The entire operation hinges on a variable no commander can control: the volatile English Channel weather. Scottish meteorologist James Stagg predicts a catastrophic storm that could destroy the fleet and cost tens of thousands of lives, while his American counterpart predicts clear skies. With the invasion window closing, Eisenhower and Stagg are locked in a high-stakes battle of conviction, trust, and ultimate responsibility.
The True Story Behind Pressure
The core conflict of Pressure is entirely factual. D-Day required a rare combination of conditions: a full moon for airborne drops, low tide at dawn to expose German beach obstacles, and calm seas with clear skies for air cover and troop transports.
Group Captain James Stagg, heading a joint team of British and American forecasters, identified a severe low-pressure system moving across the Atlantic that would hit the Channel on June 5. Stagg convinced Eisenhower to postpone the invasion by 24 hours. Crucially, Stagg then spotted a brief 36-hour break in the storm system for June 6—a tiny weather window that Eisenhower seized to launch the landings, catching German forces off guard. Stagg’s meticulous forecasting is widely remembered as one of the most consequential meteorological calls in history.
