'Train Dreams' is a major new original film coming to Netflix this November. So what's it about?
Adapted from Denis Johnson’s acclaimed novella, Train Dreams is a poignant exploration of one man’s quiet, profound journey through a rapidly transforming America.
The new original film is coming to Netflix this November.
Train Dreams, based on the beloved work by Denis Johnson, tells the deeply moving story of Robert Grainier (Golden Globe nominee Joel Edgerton), a logger and railroad worker navigating life during the sweeping changes of early 20th-century America. Orphaned as a child, Robert comes of age in the majestic forests of the Pacific Northwest, contributing to the expansion of the American railroad alongside a cast of unforgettable characters shaped by the wild frontier.
After a gentle courtship, he marries Gladys (Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones), and together they create a home—though Robert’s demanding work often pulls him away from his family. When tragedy strikes, Robert’s path veers into the unexpected, leading him to a deeper connection with the very wilderness he once worked to tame. Amidst the trees he once felled, he discovers harsh truths, quiet grace, and the enduring mystery of the human spirit.
A lyrical tribute to a fading way of life and the quiet resilience of those who lived it, Train Dreams captures a bygone era and the extraordinary within the ordinary. Directed by Academy Award nominee Clint Bentley, with a screenplay by Bentley and fellow Academy Award nominee Greg Kwedar (Sing Sing), the film also features performances from Academy Award nominees William H. Macy and Kerry Condon.
