A harrowing story of survival, family legacy, and claustrophobic terror is officially making its way to the big screen. Whalefall, an upcoming film adaptation of Daniel Kraus’s acclaimed novel of the same name, promises to deliver a high-concept survival thriller unlike anything audiences have seen before.
The Plot: A Race Against Time inside the Unthinkable
The story centers on Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams), a young man grappling with grief following the tragic death of his father (Josh Brolin). Driven by a desperate need for closure, Jay ventures out to dive off the Central Coast of California in search of his father’s remains.
However, his routine search takes a terrifying turn when Jay is unexpectedly swallowed alive by a massive sperm whale. Trapped in the dark interior of the creature with a rapidly dwindling one-hour supply of oxygen, Jay must fight for his life. As panic sets in, he realizes that the hard-earned, practical lessons imparted by his late father may be his only key to survival and escape.

The film boasts a talented ensemble cast and a heavyweight team behind the camera:
Cast: Austin Abrams (Euphoria, Do Revenge), Josh Brolin (Dune, Avengers: Endgame), Elisabeth Shue (The Boys, Leaving Las Vegas), John Ortiz (Fast & Furious), Jane Levy (Don’t Breathe), and Emily Rudd (One Piece).

Official budget details have been kept under wraps, though industry expectations point toward a mid-budget studio thriller given its tight narrative focus and heavily VFX-driven environment.
