Richard Osman's smash-hit novel 'The Thursday Murder Club' comes to Netflix on 22 August. Watch him discuss the big screen adaptation in this interview he did with ITV’s This Morning last year.
The Thursday Murder Club is a witty and heart-warming crime mystery by Richard Osman, first published in 2020. It follows four lively residents of a quiet Kent retirement village—Elizabeth, a former spy; Ron, a one-time union leader; Ibrahim, a retired psychiatrist; and Joyce, a former nurse—who meet weekly to pore over unsolved cases. When a local property developer is found dead, the group suddenly finds themselves in the middle of an active investigation, blending sharp deduction with unexpected humour. The novel was a runaway success, becoming a bestseller within days of release and going on to sell millions of copies worldwide. It also launched a hugely popular book series that has resonated with readers for its charm, clever plotting, and endearing cast of characters.
A film adaptation will be in select UK cinemas before arriving on Netflix on 22nd of August. Directed by Chris Columbus and produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, the movie features an all-star line-up: Helen Mirren as Elizabeth, Pierce Brosnan as Ron, Ben Kingsley as Ibrahim, and Celia Imrie as Joyce.
They are joined by David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Richard E. Grant, and Tom Ellis in supporting roles. Spielberg is not directing the project but serves as a producer, helping to bring Osman’s cosy yet twist-filled mystery to the big screen with a mix of warmth, humour, and intrigue.
