The Spider-Man Cut That Almost Was
The MCU’s favorite wall-crawler is back, but the journey to the big screen wasn’t without its own multiverse-level chaos. As hype reaches a fever pitch for Friday’s release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, star Tom Holland opened up about the grueling post-production process—and one specific edit of the film that almost ruined the magic.
Speaking to Quotable, the Peter Parker actor noted he and his co-stars have “seen loads of different cuts” of his latest MCU outing, which premieres Friday in theaters, including one they “hated.”
“What’s really interesting is, we’ve seen loads of different cuts of this movie, and one of the cuts was, they took all of the notes from all of the random people that saw the film, and they changed the movie,” he told Quotable. “And then, we watched it and we hated it.”
Test screenings are a staple of Hollywood blockbusters, but as Holland points out, designing a movie entirely by committee can strip away its heart. Luckily, the creative team realized the misstep before it was too late and pivoted back toward their original vision.
Holland added, “It totally didn’t work. And it’s what the people were asking for, but it wasn’t quite what we wanted as the creatives. But they learned lessons from that experience. So, a movie can change in a thousand different ways in the edit room.”
