The Hunt for Gollum: Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood Reunite for New Lord of the Rings Movie
Entertainment News: Sir Ian McKellen has revealed Frodo and Gandalf will return for new Lord of the Rings movie: The Hunt for Gollum.
A new chapter in Middle-earth is on the way: The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will reunite Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood on screen.
During London’s For Love of Fantasy panel event, McKellen teased the project, saying: “I hear there’s going to be another movie set in Middle-earth, and it’s going to start filming in May. It’s going to be directed by Gollum and it’s all about Gollum.”
The legendary actor added with a smile: “I’ll tell you two secrets about the casting: there’s a character in the movie called Frodo, and there’s another character called Gandalf. Apart from that, my lips are sealed!”
Set to open worldwide on December 17, 2027, the film will be produced by Warner Bros. Pictures. Andy Serkis, who famously portrayed Gollum in the original trilogy, is returning both in front of and behind the camera, taking on the role of director while reprising his iconic character. Longtime Middle-earth stewards Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens are also attached as producers, ensuring continuity with the beloved saga.
The announcement arrives with enormous expectations, given the remarkable legacy of the earlier films. Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001–2003) was not only a critical triumph but also a box office juggernaut, grossing nearly $3 billion worldwide. The final installment, The Return of the King, swept the Academy Awards in 2004, winning 11 Oscars, including Best Picture—tying the record for the most wins in Oscar history. Beyond its commercial and awards success, the trilogy is frequently ranked among the greatest film achievements of all time, praised for its groundbreaking visual effects, emotional depth, and faithfulness to J.R.R. Tolkien’s world.
Jackson’s later Hobbit trilogy (2012–2014) expanded the universe further, bringing in another $2.9 billion globally, underscoring the enduring popularity of Tolkien’s stories on the big screen.
With The Hunt for Gollum, fans will once again return to the shadowed paths and mythic landscapes of Middle-earth—this time with a story focused on one of Tolkien’s most haunting and complex creations.
