Lewis Capaldi credits Ed Sheeran in first radio interview in 2 years
This morning Lewi Capaldi joined Capital Breakfast’s Chris Stark for his very first UK Radio interview in over TWO years.
Here’s what Lewis Capaldi said on Capital Breakfast today
Lewis Capaldi credits Ed Sheeran who got him back to live performing after a secret gig at the Devonshire Pub
CS: The last time I was in here [Devonshire Pub] was with you, my memory is a bit shady from that night because I’ve had a couple of jars, we had a catch up, and something that was so special about that is that you got up and sang a couple of songs that night
LC: I probably sang in here, over the two years that I was gone, I probably only ever got up and sang in this pub. The amazing thing about being back here is they don’t let you film. They don’t let anyone film and if anyone does, they seem to get them out, apart from us right now. It’s private and quiet and loads of people come in here and play
CS: I come in here a fair bit, and it’s called the Devonshire
LC: Between this and Glastonbury, or the one I did up in Scotland, this here would be where I sang.
CS: How does it feel for you?
LC: It’s more nerve wracking than anything else. Feeling that comfortable to get back up, playing some songs, being here was the first sort of step into ‘maybe I can get up and sing’. I think the first night I sang here was with [Ed] Sheeran he was in singing and he was like, “come up and sing a song” so credit to him for getting me up and singing again.
Lewis Capaldi talks about meeting Justin Bieber at a party and how Justin has ‘aired’ Lewis’ text
LC: I was in Los Angeles California, and I had flown in and my friend Justin, Justin Stirling, not Justin Bieber, although here’s a story! So Justin Stirling had said to me, we’re going to this party, tomorrow night if you want to come, it’s a swanky affair I think, the papers said I was at one of the Jenner’s parties, but I don’t think I was…
CS: Kylie Jenner…that’s what I heard
LC: I didn’t see either of them
CS: How can you not know [laughs]
LC: I was just invited as a last, I wasn’t invited because I was cool. I bought that [ghostbusters costume] on Deliveroo. So I go to this party, and it was amazing, there was famous people, Charli xcx was there, and Justin Bieber was there. And Bieber comes over to me and he’s like
‘Hey man what’s going on?’ And I’m like you don’t know who I am, ‘you don’t know my name’ , and he’s like ‘of course I do it’s Lewis Capaldi’ and me and Bieber have this super night, this really lovely evening together, we didn’t spend the night together, but we hang out, and me and the Biebs are going to be best pals, this is huge. He’s like ‘make sure I get your number tomorrow’ and I was like, me and the Biebs this is huge. Text him the most sucking up his a** “just wanted to jump on Bro, and say last night was so special, great guy, so nice to hang with you, such a dude’ all this stuff. He likes it and doesn’t reply to me. So if you’re out there Bieber, text me back! Bieber aired me.
Lewis Capaldi finally admits the REAL reason his and Calvin Harris’ song has never been released "This is the thing, I don’t like the song. I don’t like my version of the song"
LC: Me and Calvin have done a song together, he was in Ibiza the same time as me, I went and recorded a version of it. He sent it to me afterwards. I avoid any conflict, avoid letting people down, I’m a people pleaser. I try and please people
CS: Do you not think you’ll please the people if you let the song come out
LC: This is the thing, I don’t like the song. I don’t like my version of the song, I should say.
CS: You’re quite a self critical person
LC: I showed my friends it and they agree. But the problem I found with the Calvin thing is that I never replied to Calvin, telling him that I didn’t like it. He then messages me two months later like “hate it?” And I grew up idolising Calvin Harris, and to tell him I don’t like his song so I just ignored that as well. And to this day haven’t replied to him, I have seen him since, and I’d love to do a Calvin Harris song, but he has to sing on it as well.
