Missing detectives, multiple murders and high-ranking cover-ups. It can mean only one thing... Ludwig is back!
The hit BBC comedy-mystery returns tonight at 9pm on BBC One. Fans who can’t wait for the linear broadcast can already stream the new series on BBC iPlayer, while viewers in the US can catch up on Season 1 on BritBox ahead of the new episodes which land on the platform 13 October.
What to Expect in Season 2
Master puzzle-setter John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor (David Mitchell) is now a crime scene consultant, working alongside DCI Russell Carter (Dipo Ola) on ‘impossible’ crimes for the Cambridge Police Authority. But with his identical twin brother still missing, John and his sister-in-law Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin) won’t stop – there’s a puzzle to solve and a husband and father to bring home. One masquerade may have ended, but a new one has just begun.
No longer having to impersonate his twin brother and following his successful closure rate for the major investigation team, puzzle setter John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor returns under his new job title of crime scene consultant.
After retrieving the files from storage, John is determined to find the incriminating information that led to Sinclair’s death and James’s disappearance.
As the Cambridge Police Authority undergoes investigation in light of the Holly Pinder scandal, an unusual double confession at the theatre sees John take centre stage, where he must prove who didn’t commit the crime. The case takes a turn when John meets a key witness who appears to recognise him - and not because he’s Ludwig. Is there more to this witness than meets the eye?
The Stars on Ludwig’s Dynamic Return
David Mitchell says: “At the start of this series, he’s discovered all this evidence and potential clues to the terrible thing that’s been going on that made his brother disappear. But it’s boxes and boxes. He’s quite happily pottering his way through them, trying to work out which of the conspiracy theories are absolute nonsense and which of them might have a kernel of truth. It’s like a big jumbo crossword that you can luxuriate over for a whole Sunday afternoon but, in this case, a Sunday afternoon might turn into months.
Meanwhile, Lucy has more of a sense of urgency. John can’t go into the police station very much, because there haven’t been any murders for him to be called in as a consultant on, which frustrates Lucy. She thinks the answer to the mystery is more likely to lie there than in these sterile boxes. But then, fortunately for the show, if not for the fictional characters involved, a spate of murders begins”.
Anna Maxwell-Martin says: “John and Lucy are more partners in crime now, rather than Lucy just being a cipher for information. They’re in it together and on the mission together, which is good. Lucy is sparky, energetic, and perpetually positive. She is the Tigger to his Eeyore. He is thinking it through, and she wants to grasp life. It’s wonderful to play someone so positive”.
The episode airs tonight at 9pm in the UK on BBC One, but you can already stream it on iplayer. You can watch season 1 of the British comedy-mystery series Ludwig in the US on BritBox.
