First 'F1 The Movie' reviews are in and critics love it
The new 'F1 The Movie' starring Brad Pitt has been well received by critics at its first screening.
Apple TV's upcoming film F1: The Movie has generated significant buzz following an exclusive screening at the Monaco Grand Prix, with Formula 1 drivers and insiders praising its authenticity and cinematic quality. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) and starring Brad Pitt, the film is set to release internationally on June 25 and in North America on June 27, 2025.
In F1, Pitt portrays Sonny Hayes, a retired driver returning to mentor rookie Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) for the fictional APXGP team. The film's production involved filming during actual Grand Prix weekends, with real F1 teams and drivers participating, enhancing its realism. Ferrari's Carlos Sainz remarked, "The quality of footage they got is insane. Honestly insane." Haas driver Oliver Bearman noted, "It really depicts in a great way what we go through, in a bit of a Hollywood way as you would expect, but that makes it really interesting."
The film's commitment to authenticity extends to its cinematography. Director Kosinski developed a new camera system, adapting technology from Top Gun: Maverick, to capture high-speed racing sequences. This involved mounting lightweight, motorized cameras on real F1 cars, allowing dynamic shots during live races. formula1.com
Co-producer Lewis Hamilton emphasized the film's immersive experience, stating it aims to be "the best racing movie that's ever existed." Red Bull team principal Christian Horner also praised the film's authenticity, noting that even the most scrutinizing viewers would find it genuine. imore.comreuters.com
Apple TV say: “Dubbed “the greatest that never was,” Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was FORMULA 1’s most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he’s a nomadic racer-for-hire when he’s approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling FORMULA 1 team that is on the verge of collapse. Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to FORMULA 1 for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He’ll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team’s hotshot rookie intent on setting his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny’s past catches up with him and he finds that in FORMULA 1, your teammate is your fiercest competition — and the road to redemption is not something you can travel alone”.
F1: The Movie, is released on 25 June.
