Apple TV+ has released the first teaser trailer for its sweeping historical drama Chief of War, a nine-episode limited series starring, co-written, and executive produced by Jason Momoa. Set against the stunning landscapes of Hawai‘i, the series is inspired by true events and centers on Ka‘iana, a Native Hawaiian warrior played by Momoa, as he strives to unite the islands prior to Western colonization in the late 1700s. Chief of War will premiere globally on Apple TV+ with its first two episodes on Friday, August 1, 2025, followed by new episodes every Friday through September 19.
Told through an Indigenous lens, Chief of War is a deeply personal project for creators Momoa and Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett, both of whom share Native Hawaiian roots. The cast is predominantly Polynesian, featuring performances from Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, rising star Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale‘o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Te Kohe Tuhaka, and Benjamin Hoetjes.
Produced by FIFTH SEASON and Chernin Entertainment, the series sees Momoa directing the finale and serving as executive producer. Doug Jung acts as showrunner and executive producer, alongside Sibbett, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Tracey Cook, and Brian Andrew Mendoza. Justin Chon directs and executive produces the first two episodes. Additional executive producers include Anders Engström, Jim Rowe, Molly Allen, Francis Lawrence, and Tim Van Patten.
Legendary composer Hans Zimmer wrote the series’ main theme and co-produced the score with James Everingham under Bleeding Fingers Music, the acclaimed composer collective Zimmer co-founded in 2013.
Chief of War follows the global success of Apple’s hit series See, which also starred Momoa. All three seasons of See are currently available to stream worldwide on Apple TV+.
