BBC announces upgraded sports app and new digital football coverage
BBC Sport is drastically revamping its men’s football coverage for the 2026/27 campaign, introducing fan-led digital initiatives, fresh studio analysis, and expanded app features.

New YouTube Digital Series
A dedicated BBC Football YouTube channel is launching with four brand-new original series to extend discussion beyond matchdays:
FANS²: Unfiltered debates where rival supporters are tasked with reaching a unanimous verdict on football’s most polarizing questions.
The Truth About Football: Fast-paced, 90-second animated explainer videos analyzing tactics, data, culture, and football history.
Golden Goal: A travelling target-goal challenge where celebrity supporters showcase their skills on a leaderboard while opening up about their love for the game.
Football Hub: A weekly tactical breakdown and roundup reviewing the weekend’s major talking points.
Note: World Cup digital formats Group Chat and Game Changes also return for the new domestic season.
Premier League Fan Collective & App Upgrades
To give supporters a direct voice, BBC Sport has established a 20-club Premier League fan collective. Comprising creators and passionate fans, their reactions, debates, and video content will feature prominently across the BBC Sport app’s Shorts feed and YouTube.
The upgraded BBC Sport app also introduces:
MOTD Predictor: A new score-prediction game integrated directly into the platform.
Personalized Content: Club-specific updates and alerts via the refreshed ‘My Sport’ feature.
Daily Brainteasers: The daily return of the Who Am I? trivia challenge.
Expanded Match of the Day Lineup & Tech
Alongside core pundits Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards, Joe Hart, Ellen White, Steph Houghton, Danny Murphy, and Ashley Williams, the Match of the Day roster expands with guest analysis from Toby Alderweireld, Robbie Keane, Ashley Young, and manager Thomas Frank.
The studio will also incorporate technical visual analytics developed during the 2026 World Cup to enhance tactical breakdowns across Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League coverage.
The Football Interview & Key Broadcasts
Kelly Somers returns for The Football Interview, kicking off on Saturday, 22 August on BBC One (12:45 PM BST) with an exclusive sit-down with Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison.
The wider 2026/27 broadcasting lineup includes:
Radio 5 Live & 5 Sports Extra: 209 live, exclusive Premier League radio commentaries, alongside live Champions League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, and home nations international action.
Live TV & Digital Streaming: Free-to-air coverage of two live FA Cup matches per round, weekly live Bundesliga streaming, and 38 live Serie A fixtures (19 on BBC ALBA with Gaelic/English co-commentary and 19 on BBC iPlayer).
Nations Coverage: Comprehensive international and domestic rights for Scotland (Sportscene/Sportsound), Wales (Novira Cymru Premier & international fixtures), and Northern Ireland (a new three-year IFA/NIFL deal covering senior international matches, 30 live Irish Premiership streams, and the Irish Cup).
